How to record longer than Loom's 5-minute limit, for free

Loom's free Starter plan ends every recording at 5 minutes; only its paid plans remove the limit. To record longer for free, use Emaki's screen recorder: it runs in Chrome or Edge, needs no account, and has no time limit and no cap on how many videos you make. Record your screen with your camera and microphone, then download an MP4 or share a link.

Atlassian's own help page says the 5-minute limit applies to the free Starter plan and to limited roles such as Creator Lite. The fix it offers is a paid workspace.

Step by step

Record longer than Loom's 5-minute limit

  1. Open the recorder

Go to emaki.appzlr.com/record/ in Chrome or Edge, or add the free Emaki extension and choose Record in its side panel. No sign-up.

  2. Pick what to record

Choose a tab, a window or your whole screen, and turn on your microphone and camera if you want your face in the corner. The teleprompter can show your script while you talk.

  3. Record as long as you need

Press Start. There's no countdown to a limit: stop when you're done. The recording is saved in your browser every second, so a closed tab can be recovered.

  4. Cut, caption and save or share it

Cut out mistakes, add captions, then download an MP4, or sign in with a free account and create a share link that people can watch, comment on and react to.

  • A long recording takes disk space while you make it: an hour can take several gigabytes. Download it when you're done.
  • Free share links take videos up to 50 MB. A longer video is made smaller to fit, so about ten minutes fit; Emaki Pro takes up to 95 MB. For anything longer, download the MP4 and share it from your own drive.
  • Already pay for Loom? A paid Loom workspace has no 5-minute limit. If you still see it, Atlassian says you're probably signed in to a free workspace: set your paid one as the default and sign in again.
FAQ

Questions and answers

Why does Loom stop my recording at 5 minutes?

Because you're on Loom's free Starter plan, or on a limited role such as Creator Lite. Atlassian's help page says the limit applies to both, and that paid workspaces record without it.

Is there a free screen recorder with no time limit?

Yes. Emaki's recorder has no time limit and no limit on the number of videos, with no account and no watermark. Recordings can be as long as your computer has room for.

Can I still share my recording as a link, like Loom?

Yes. Sign in with a free account and create a link: viewers watch on any device, comment at a moment in the video and react with emoji. Free links last 1 or 7 days; Emaki Pro ($10/month or $100/year) keeps them until you delete them.

Is my recording uploaded?

No. Emaki records in your browser and keeps the video on your computer. It's only uploaded if you create a share link, and that copy is deleted when the link expires.
