How to make a how-to guide with screenshots
Instead of taking a screenshot for every step, record the task in a Chrome tab with Emaki and press Make a guide. Every click becomes a step with its own screenshot, in order, with the clicked spot circled. Give each step a title and a line of text, blur anything private and export the guide as a PDF, free up to 10 steps. Emaki Pro ($10/month or $100/year) adds Markdown with images and share links.
Taking, cropping and pasting a screenshot per step is the slow part of writing a how-to. Emaki takes each screenshot from the recording just before the click, so a menu or dropdown you opened is still showing.
Make a how-to guide with screenshots
Open the side panel
Add Emaki from the Chrome Web Store, then click its icon in the toolbar to open the side panel.
Record the task in a tab
In the side panel, choose Record, pick the tab and do the task once at your normal pace. Press Stop when you're done.
Press Make a guide
Under the finished recording, press Make a guide. Every click becomes a numbered step with a screenshot and a ring around the spot you clicked.
Add text and tidy the screenshots
Write a title for each step and a note where it helps. Blur private details, and if a screenshot shows the wrong moment, pick another frame for that step.
Save or share it
Export a PDF of up to 10 steps for free. With Emaki Pro, export longer guides, save Markdown with an images folder, or share a link.
- You can add a step of your own from an image file, a paste or another moment of the recording.
- Guides come from tab recordings made with the extension: Emaki notes where you click in the tab you record, not in a window, your whole screen or a desktop app. It never records what you type or what the page says.
Questions and answers
Do I have to take each screenshot myself?
No. Emaki takes every step's screenshot from the recording, just before each click, and marks the spot you clicked. You can pick a different frame for any step.
Can I share the guide as a link?
Yes, with Emaki Pro ($10/month or $100/year). Pick 1, 7 or 30 days, or until you delete it. Anyone with the link sees the numbered steps with their screenshots and text. After you edit the guide, press Update link and the same link shows the new version.
Can AI write the text for each step?
With Emaki Pro + AI ($20/month or $200/year), press Draft step text and every step gets a short instruction written from its screenshot. It's written on this computer when Chrome supports it; otherwise the step images go to Google's Gemini API, and the whole guide counts as one of your 100 AI uses a month. Check the text before you share the guide: AI can get a step wrong.
Where are my guides saved?
No. Guides and their screenshots are saved in your browser on emaki.appzlr.com. A guide leaves your computer only if you share it as a link, which uploads its step images, title and text, or if Pro + AI step text is written by Google's Gemini API because Chrome can't write it on this computer.
