How to annotate a screenshot in Chrome
Capture the page with the Emaki extension, click Edit and mark it up in the Emaki editor: Arrow, Box, Text, Numbered step, Highlighter and Pen, in eight colors and three sizes. The editor is part of Emaki Pro ($10/month or $100/year). Capturing a page and saving it as PNG, JPG or PDF are free.
The editor opens in a Chrome tab next to the page you captured, and the screenshot stays in your browser while you mark it up.
Annotate a screenshot with arrows, boxes, text and steps
Open the side panel
Add Emaki from the Chrome Web Store, then click its icon in the toolbar to open the side panel.
Capture the page and click Edit
Choose Full page, Scrolling area or Visible area and capture. When the side panel shows Your capture is ready, click Edit to open it in the Emaki editor.
Add arrows and boxes
Pick Arrow (A) and drag from where it starts to what it points at. Pick Box (R) and drag around what matters.
Add text and numbered steps
Pick Text (T), click where the label goes and type; Enter finishes and Shift+Enter starts a new line. Pick Numbered step (N) and click each place in order: each click adds the next number.
Pick colors and sizes, then save
Choose a color and S, M or L above the image. Then click Save PNG, or Copy to paste it into a doc, chat or ticket.
- The Highlighter (H) marks text in yellow by default, and the Pen (P) draws freehand.
- Crop (C) trims the capture, and Beautify adds a browser frame, padding and a backdrop.
- It works on any image, not only captures: open the Emaki editor at emaki.appzlr.com/edit/, sign in, and open, drop or paste the image.
Questions and answers
Is annotating screenshots free?
No. The editor, with its arrows, boxes, text, numbered steps, highlighter and pen, is part of Emaki Pro, $10/month or $100/year. Capturing a page and saving it as PNG, JPG or PDF are free.
Can I change an annotation after I add it?
Yes. Pick Select (V) and drag it to move it, or drag its handles to resize it. With it selected, pick another color or size to change it, or press Delete to remove it. Ctrl+Z undoes and Ctrl+Shift+Z redoes.
Can I save the annotated screenshot as a PDF?
Yes. Click the arrow next to Save PNG and choose PDF or JPG, both free, or with Pro PDF with URL and time or WebP. Every PDF is paginated; PDF with URL and time also prints the page URL and capture time on every page.
Do I have to upload my screenshot to annotate it?
No. The editor runs in your browser tab and the screenshot stays there. It's only uploaded if you create a share link or use an AI edit.
