Emaki guide

How to make a step-by-step guide from a screen recording

Record the task in a Chrome tab with the free Emaki extension, then press Make a guide. Every click becomes a numbered step: a screenshot from just before the click, with the clicked spot marked. Reword, reorder or delete steps, blur private details and save the guide in your browser. A PDF of up to 10 steps is free, with no watermark; Emaki Pro ($10/month or $100/year) removes the limit and adds Markdown export, share links and version history.

While it records a tab, Emaki notes where you click: positions only, never page text or what you type. That's how it finds each step in the video, and because each screenshot is taken just before the click, a menu you opened is still open in it.

Step by step

Make a step-by-step guide from a screen recording

  1. Open the side panel

Add Emaki from the Chrome Web Store, then click its icon in the toolbar to open the side panel.

  2. Record the task in a tab

In the side panel, choose Record, pick the tab and do the task once at your normal pace. Press Stop when you're done.

  3. Press Make a guide

Under the finished recording, press Make a guide. The guide opens at emaki.appzlr.com/guide/ with one step per click. A tab recording you open on emaki.appzlr.com/video/ can be made into a guide too.

  4. Edit the steps

Give each step a title and, where it helps, a note. Drag steps into order, delete the ones you don't need and blur anything private. If a screenshot shows the wrong moment, pick another frame for that step.

  5. Export the guide

Press PDF to save it. Free guides export up to 10 steps, with no watermark. With Emaki Pro, export any number of steps, save Markdown with the images, or share a link.

  • Guides come from tab recordings made with the extension: Emaki notes where you click in the tab you record, not in a window, your whole screen or a desktop app. It never records what you type or what the page says.
  • A click in a field becomes a step, and typing shows up as Type in the highlighted field. Add what to type in that step's note.
  • Guides are saved in this browser on emaki.appzlr.com, so they're still there when you come back. Export a PDF to keep a copy somewhere else.
FAQ

Questions and answers

Is making a guide from a recording free?

Yes. Recording, making, editing and saving guides are free, and so is a PDF of up to 10 steps with no watermark. Emaki Pro, $10/month or $100/year, adds PDFs of any length, Markdown export, share links and version history. Pro + AI, $20/month or $200/year, also writes the step text for you.

Does Emaki record what I type or what's on the page?

No. While it records a tab, Emaki notes only where the pointer moves and clicks, and where a field you type into is, never the text. The screenshots in your guide come from the video itself.

Can it write the step text for me?

With Emaki Pro + AI ($20/month or $200/year), press Draft step text and every step gets a short instruction written from its screenshot. It's written on this computer when Chrome supports it; otherwise the step images go to Google's Gemini API, and the whole guide counts as one of your 100 AI uses a month. Check the text before you share the guide: AI can get a step wrong.

Is my guide uploaded anywhere?

No. Guides and their screenshots are saved in your browser on emaki.appzlr.com. A guide leaves your computer only if you share it as a link, which uploads its step images, title and text, or if Pro + AI step text is written by Google's Gemini API because Chrome can't write it on this computer.
