Emaki guide

A free Loom alternative for Linux

Loom has no app for Linux (its desktop app is for Mac and Windows), so on Ubuntu and other distributions it's limited to the Chrome extension and the free plan's 5-minute limit. Emaki's screen recorder runs in Chrome or Edge on Linux with no time limit, no video cap and no account to record. Record a tab, a window or your whole screen with your camera and microphone, then download an MP4 or share a link.

Step by step

Loom alternative for Linux

  1. Open the recorder

Go to emaki.appzlr.com/record/ in Chrome or Edge, or add the free Emaki extension and choose Record in its side panel. No sign-up.

  2. Pick what to record

Choose a tab, a window or your whole screen, and turn on your microphone and camera if you want your face in the corner. The teleprompter can show your script while you talk.

  3. Record as long as you need

Press Start. There's no countdown to a limit: stop when you're done. The recording is saved in your browser every second, so a closed tab can be recovered.

  4. Cut, caption and save or share it

Cut out mistakes, add captions, then download an MP4, or sign in with a free account and create a share link that people can watch, comment on and react to.

  • Recording the whole screen or another window depends on your desktop's screen sharing: on Wayland, Chrome asks through the system's own picker.
  • If you want an open-source desktop recorder, OBS Studio runs on Linux too; it has no share links or captions built in.
FAQ

Questions and answers

Is there a Loom app for Linux?

No. Atlassian's help page says Loom's desktop app works on Mac and Windows, not Linux or ChromeOS. On Linux you can use Loom's Chrome extension.

What's a free screen recorder for Ubuntu with a webcam?

Emaki, in Chrome or Edge: it records a tab, a window or your screen with your webcam in the corner and your microphone, with no time limit and no account. OBS Studio is a free desktop option if you want more control.

Can I share the recording as a link from Linux?

Yes. Sign in with a free account on the video page and create a link; viewers can watch, comment and react on any device.

Is my recording uploaded?

No. Emaki records in your browser and keeps the video on your computer. It's only uploaded if you create a share link, and that copy is deleted when the link expires.
