Emaki guide

A free Loom alternative for Chromebook

On a Chromebook, Loom works only through its Chrome extension (its desktop app is for Mac and Windows), with the free plan's 5-minute, 25-video and 720p limits. Emaki's recorder also runs in Chrome, so it works on any Chromebook, but with no time limit, no video cap and no account to record. Record a tab, a window or the whole screen with your camera and microphone, then download an MP4 or share a link.

Step by step

Loom alternative for Chromebook

  1. Open the recorder

Go to emaki.appzlr.com/record/ in Chrome or Edge, or add the free Emaki extension and choose Record in its side panel. No sign-up.

  2. Pick what to record

Choose a tab, a window or your whole screen, and turn on your microphone and camera if you want your face in the corner. The teleprompter can show your script while you talk.

  3. Record as long as you need

Press Start. There's no countdown to a limit: stop when you're done. The recording is saved in your browser every second, so a closed tab can be recovered.

  4. Cut, caption and save or share it

Cut out mistakes, add captions, then download an MP4, or sign in with a free account and create a share link that people can watch, comment on and react to.

  • School Chromebooks may block extensions. The web recorder at emaki.appzlr.com/record/ needs no extension, only Chrome.
  • Recordings take space on the Chromebook while you make them. Download long ones when you're done, or share them as a link.
FAQ

Questions and answers

Does Loom work on a Chromebook?

Through its Chrome extension, yes. Atlassian's help page says Loom's desktop app isn't available for Chromebooks, so desktop-app features like the drawing tool and click highlights aren't either.

Is there a free screen recorder for Chromebook with no time limit?

Yes. Emaki's recorder runs in Chrome on ChromeOS with no time limit, no video cap, no watermark and no account to record.

Can students use it?

Yes. Nothing to sign up for to record, and the video stays on the Chromebook until you download or share it. If your school blocks extensions, use the web recorder.

Is my recording uploaded?

No. Emaki records in your browser and keeps the video on your computer. It's only uploaded if you create a share link, and that copy is deleted when the link expires.
