Emaki guide

How to screenshot a long Gmail thread

Open the conversation in Gmail in Chrome and click Gmail's Expand all button, so every message is open. Then use Emaki, a free Chrome extension: choose Scrolling area, click the email and press Capture the whole area. Emaki scrolls the thread from top to bottom and stitches it into one tall image you can save as a PNG or PDF.

Gmail's messages scroll inside the page, not the window, so ordinary full page screenshot tools only capture one screen. Gmail also folds older messages of a long thread into one line, and a folded message stays folded in a screenshot.

Step by step

Screenshot a long Gmail email thread

  1. Open the thread

Add Emaki from the Chrome Web Store, then open Gmail in Chrome and click the conversation.

  2. Expand every message

Click Expand all at the top right of the conversation. It's Gmail's own button and opens every message in the thread. Quoted earlier replies stay behind the three dots unless you click them.

  3. Pick the email

Click the Emaki icon in the toolbar to open the side panel. Choose Scrolling area, then click anywhere in the email. The side panel shows a preview of what you picked.

  4. Press Capture the whole area

Emaki scrolls the thread from top to bottom and stitches every shot into one image.

  5. Save or edit it

Click Download to save the capture as a PNG, or Edit to save it as a JPG or PDF. With Emaki Pro, the editor also crops it, adds arrows, boxes or text, or blurs private details first.

  • For a PDF, click Edit, then the arrow next to Save PNG, and choose PDF. Page breaks fall in the gaps between lines, so no line is cut in half. It's free.
  • Free captures are up to 150 shots long. Emaki Pro goes up to 1000.
FAQ

Questions and answers

How is this different from Gmail's Print all?

Print all lays the emails out again as a document for paper. Emaki captures the thread the way it looks in your browser, with the formatting and images you see.

Do I have to open every message first?

Yes. Emaki captures what's on the page, so a folded message stays folded in the image. Click Expand all in Gmail before you capture.

Can I hide email addresses before I share it?

Yes, with Emaki Pro ($10/month or $100/year). The editor's blur tool hides names, email addresses and numbers. The free plan saves the capture as a PNG, JPG or PDF, without editing.

Does Emaki upload my email?

No. Screenshots and page content are processed on your computer and never uploaded. The only exceptions are ones you choose: an AI edit on Pro + AI sends just the image or area you're editing to Google's Gemini API, and a Pro share link uploads that one capture until the link expires.
