A CleanShot X alternative for Windows, Linux and ChromeOS

CleanShot X is a Mac app. Emaki is a free Chrome extension that runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS, with full page and scrolling screenshots, a screen recorder with camera and mic, step-by-step guides, and a browser-based editor for crop, arrows, text and blur. It works inside Chrome, so it captures web pages and the chats, feeds and panels that scroll inside them, not other desktop apps.

Why switch

What Emaki does differently

Not only for Macs

Emaki is a Chrome extension, so the same captures, recordings and editor work on Windows, Linux and Chromebooks, and on a Mac too. Nothing to install beyond the extension, and no licence per computer.

Free to capture

Full page, scrolling area and visible area screenshots, autoscroll, the screen recorder and step-by-step guides cost nothing and need no account. Emaki Pro is for the editor, blur, sticky header removal and share links.

Pick the part of the page that scrolls

On a page with a sidebar, a message list and a thread that each scroll on their own, Scrolling area mode captures the one you click, shows a preview and says how many screens long it is before you start.

Links that end when you want

With Emaki Pro, a shared screenshot or video stops working after 1, 7 or 30 days, and the copy is deleted when it does. Nothing is uploaded otherwise.

To be fair

When CleanShot X may suit you better

  • You're on a Mac and want to capture any app, window or region, not only Chrome.
  • You'd rather pay once than subscribe.
  • You want to copy text out of a screenshot, freeze the screen, use a timer or show your keystrokes in a recording.
  • Your team shares captures from its own domain with its own branding.
FAQ

Questions and answers

Is there a CleanShot X for Windows?

CleanShot X's own pricing page says it needs macOS 13 or newer. Emaki isn't a copy of it, but it does full page and scrolling screenshots, screen recording and an editor with crop, arrows, text and blur in Chrome on Windows, Linux, ChromeOS and macOS, free to capture.

Can Emaki capture a desktop app or a region of the screen?

No. Emaki captures web pages in Chrome, including the chats, feeds and panels that scroll inside them. It can record a window or your whole screen as video, but screenshots are of pages only.

Does Emaki have a screenshot editor?

Yes, with Emaki Pro ($10/month or $100/year): crop, arrows, boxes, text, blur, highlighter, numbered steps, pen, and Beautify for a browser frame, padding and a backdrop. Saving a capture as JPG or PDF from the editor is free.

Does Emaki upload my screenshots?

No. Screenshots are made on your computer and never uploaded, unless you create a share link with Emaki Pro or use an AI edit on Pro + AI.
